£l6O TAKEN FROM BANK DANNEVIRKE INSTITUTION'S LOSS. TEMPORARY ABSENCE OF TELLER. [Per Press Association J Dannevirke Jan. 0. Th© unauthorised transfer of approximately £l6O from the Dannevirke branch of the Commercial Bank to some person at present unknown took place this merning between 10.15 and 10.20 o’clock. During the temporary absence at the rear of the building of the teller, Mr. Gimblett, some person entered the premises, whicn are situated in the main thoroughfare opposite the Post Office, and, making the most of his .opportunity, walked out with a roll of single notes of the amount previously stated. The only other member of the staff was the manager. Mr. R. Chisholm, who was in his private office at the rear of the chamber where public business is transacted. The money was in the teller’s drawer on the inside of a four-foot counter, the door of the grille being closed. The individual who made the daring theft had to open the door grille, reach over the counter and abstract the notes from the drawer. The manager, • hearing a noise, came from his office to investigate and saw only a shadow on the window dividing the compartment where the lodgers are kept. On Mr. Giinblett’s return he mentioned the incident and investigation of the cash was immediately made, the loss of the bundle of notes being discovered. The police are now busy.
