HUKARERE SCHOOL

ANNUAL BREAK-UP CEREMONY PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. ADDRESS BY MRS SEDGWICK. Tho annual breaking-up ceremony and prize-giving of the Hukarere School took place at Napier yesterday, a large number interested in the school attending. The headmistress, in her report, men tinned the great loss the school had suffered in the deaths of two of its most devoted friends, Miss Williams, and Dean Mayne. There were 69 girls in the school during the year. One left tn May to take up teaching and tour others had been accepted as nurses.

In the unavoidable absence of Bishop Sedgwick, Mrs Sedgwick addressed the gathering before presenting the prizes. The headmastress, she said, had spontaneously remarked to her that the girls had all given of their best and had worked happ’ly with the staff on All occasions. To be good girls in the sheltered life they were leading was rather easy, said Mrs Sedgwick, but they would find it a very great deal harder when they went away from the school and had to stand on their feet alone. They would find others weaker than themselves and she urged them always to hold out a helping hand to them. As the Governor-General had recently said, they could do nothing without God.

Mrs Sedowick then presented the following prizes, after which the girls gave nn exhibition noi dance and the visitors were entenrtainod at afternoon tea: —
