HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. Following is the November report of the principal of the Hastings High School (Mr. W. A. G Penilngton, MA.), which will be submitted at the meeting of the Board of Governors to be held next 1 riday evening — Attendance: The number of pupils on the roll during the month averaged 313.3. The average daily attendance was 289 4 or 92 per cent of the roll number As is usual at this time of the year, a number of pupils have left school in oidei to take up employ me nt Staff- Mr. J. R. Dagger, M.Sc.. commenced duty as relieving master on November I.
Public Examinations: The tatter nart of the month has been busy with the various public examinations. The number of candidates from the school are:—Senior Free Place 12, Junior National Scholarship 6, Senior National Scholarship 16, Public Service Entrance 21 Public Service Shorthand Typist junior 5, Public Service Shorthand Typist, senior 1, Junior Free Place 1 For Matriculation the school is presenting 21 candidates In addition to this numbei, six other pupils are sitting on their own responsibility, although they have not reached the required standard
Games- A cricket match was play ed on the 22nd and 23rd Noveinbei against Dannevirke High School, which resulted in a very c’-Jse finish, our hoys winning by one wicket In the Saturday cricket competition our three teams have so far been very successful
Old Pupils. The annual Old Pupils' Day was hold on Wednesday. Novem her 13 and it was very successful. Games and athletic sports were held during the afternoon, after which the old pupils had tea at the school. In th a evening th© association’s annual meeting was held It is very pleasing to note the increasing interest in the school which the old pupils are showing. Cadets: Through the courtesy of Colonel R F Gambrill the colours of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment were trooped at the school bv the cadet company Corporal G. Beattie won the Challenge Belt for champion cadet shot at the 1929 Area Rifle Meeting Lieutenants Jones, Haldane and McDonald passed the recent examination for rank of captain Lieut Aitken abo nassed in three subjects, and 2nd Lieut Insull nassed the lieutenant's examination On the 28th No’emher the annual •nter-platoon competition for the Rrooke-Tavlor Cup was held and rieiit P S. George kindly acted as "udge Free Places: The Director of Edn cation has advised that pupils who -re holders of comnetenev certificates mav bo admitted to Junior Frei Places nt. this school provided that <-h°v take courses of a non-academic nature.
