A PESSIMISTIC LORD
“BRITAIN AT THE PARTING OF THE WAYS.” TRADE DECLINING. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 10, 1.35 p.m.) London, Dec. 9. In the House of Lords, Viscount Elibank stated that Britain was at the parting of the ways. Unemployment was rife and becoming worse; trade was declining, and protective barriers, were being established against British exports throughout the world. It was becoming more and more difficult for British trade to penetrate* America and Europe. There was larger trade from the United States with the Dominions and colonies than from Britain, yet the Government was content to amble along the old free trade path with an occasional palliative oily touching the fringe of the problem.
