The deaths had reached 122 on Saturday night, as the result of a disastrous earthquake in Chile and 60 others had been reported unofficially. Two hundred and fifty were injured. The cities of Talca and Chilian are the greatest sufferers. Taka is in ruins with 40 dead and 200 injured. At Chilian there are 17 dead and 30 injured. Forty were killed and 100 injured at Bardhona Camp, Teniente, at the mine belonging to the Braden Copper Co. when the shock broke a reservoir, loosing a torrent down the valley. Six are dead at Santa Cruz.
Santiago and Valparaiso were only slightly damaged but several were injured in a panic-stricken rush to the streets.
An overnight cable stated: A disastrous earthquake which occurred in Central Chile, about 200 miles south of this city, this (Saturday) morning, resulted in many deaths, which are unofficially estimated to number 287, the towns of Talca and Chilian being the -heaviest sufferers, while ten other places have been known to have suffered serious property damage and some loss of life. The chaotic condition of all communication has delayed accurate information. Army officers flew over the stricken area and upon return suggested the despatch of troops to clear the debris and remove bodies from ruined buildings. Communication with large sections ot the country is lacking.
