Members of the Hastings Women’s Choir are reminded that to-morrow (Tuesday) is the final practice to be held at the Wesley Hall at 7.45 p.m. Last Saturday afternoon the Havelock North Brownies entertained theft sister Brownies of France Pack, Napier. Games and sports were played in the vicarge paddock, and later the visitors were entertained at afternoon tea.

Wednesday, December 12 is “Parents’ Day” at Mahora School, not next Wednesday as stated on Saturday. Mahora is now a very large school with a high standard of efficiency, and parents help the children greatly by taking a personal interest in the annual function.

As stated in the Havelock news in Saturday’s issue of the “ Tribune " the concert previously advertised to be given to-night in the Village Hall, by the Hastings Women’s Choir, has bad to postponed until next Monday on account of indisposition in the form of rather severe colds. An excellent programme will be presented and the proceeds from the concert will go to the Havelock North Fire Brigade.

T* Awa Swimming Club, Napier, officially commenced the season on Saturday, when its new pavilion was declared open by the Mayor, Mr J. Vigor Brown. The Mayor congratulated the club on its lino acquisition, for which the members of the club and especially the lady members, were responsible. During the afternoon a number of swimming events were held and proved very enjoyable, both for the participants and the onlookers.

On the eve of the departure of the Byrd expedition for the Antarctic, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, on biialf of the people of New Zealand, extended to tne expedition cordial good wishes for the success of the undertaking. The Premier stated that New Zealand would render all .-usistpnee in its power should occasion arise. Commander Byrd replied expressing gratitude for the .hospitality aqd the offer of assistance.—(Press Aesociation.)

What promises to be one of the most enjoyable functions of the kind held for some time, is the garden fete which will be held on Wednesday December 5 at Mr Lindsay Gordon’s Farndon Farm House grounds, in aid of St. Mark’s Church. Clive. Great preparations have been made for the fete, at which there will be a great variety of stalls, X’mes tree, treasure hunt, strawberries and cream, ice creams, and competitions of various sorts.

A tribute to the work of the Boy Scout movement in the district was paid by members at the annual meeting of the Puketapu Sports Club on Saturday night, when it was decided to make a donation of £lO 10s to the general fund in connection with the sending of a number of Hawke’s Bay Scouts to the world wide jamboree to bo held in England shortly. It w.n stated that the- district had guaranteed its fund for the sending of John Drummond who has been selected to represent Puketapu and Kissington.

Mr E. Phillips Turner. Director of Forestry, to whom was scut a copy cf the “Tribune” of November 24. containing a description of the new roan that is now being made between Ruatahuna and Hopuruahine, at the head of the Whangs nui Inlet, Lake Waikaremoana, which will eventually be the road to the latter lake from Rotorua, writes stating that ho is personally sympathetic with respect to the securing of the scenic bush on this important route, and that ho has for.warded the article to ths Under Secretary, Lands and Survey Department, recommending that action be taken to i-eeure the preservation of th > busk along the road. —

In connection with the special train service to Napier yesterday for the consecration service at the proCathedral, the Hastings railway office issued 141 tickets, but, in addition to the train, there were several busses hired for the occasion by parties of natives, besides those taken by private cars and those who travelled by the Government ’bus service.

The quarterly meeting of the Napier Licensing Committee was held in the Napier Courthouse to-day, there being on the Bench Messrs A. M. Mowlem, &.M. (chairman), W. G. Martin, H. Bate, and C. Stubbs. Transfers of licenses were granted to Thomas Clarke Muir from Leonard A. Ryan (Clarendon Hotel), and to Mary Magdalene Oliver from Walter Francis Swift (Victoria),

A five-roomed house on the Riverbend road, near Meeanee, owned by Mr. P. Neagle, of Taradale, and occupied bv Mr F. Burgess, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Burgess were absent in Wellington at the time and their sons were away fr6m the house attending to the milking. Amout 3 o’clock the houae wag seen in flames, and soon the whole place was demolished. Nothing was saved.

As the improvements at present being effected on the Manawatu Golf Club's course at Hokowhitii will not be completed until some time in March, the club’s committee decided at their last meeting that they were unable to accept th« New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association's 1929 tournament, which is to be held late in January or in early February. The only other application for the tournament came from the Napier Golf Club and in all probability that club will now be given the fixture.
