DISTRICT NEWS OF THE DAY WAIPUKUAU

(Special Representative.) Good progress has been made by Mr J. Hill, building contractor, with the erection of the additions (brick) to the Waipukurau Rost Office, and the contract is so far forward on the road to completion that ere Christmas arrives the work will be completed. It is pleasing to record that there is an improvement in the health of Mr R. S. Ricketts, who underwent an operation recently. A visitor to Waipukurau at present is the Rev. R. F. Fish, of Caversham, Dunedin. The Rev. Fish will occupy the pulpit at St. Andrew’s Church, Waipukurau to-morrow. Mrs J. A. Newrick, of Waipukurau, who is at present a patient at the local hospital, underwent an operation on lnquiries made yesterday indicate that the patient is making satisfactory progress. Dr. J. W. Mcllwraith, M.A. LLB., senior inspector of schools under the Hawke’s Bay Education Board was in Waipukurau yesterday. Miss J. Bicknell. R.R.C., Director of the Division of Nursing Services, Public Health Department, Welling, was on a visit of inspection to the Waipukurau Public Hospital and Pukcora Sanatorium yesterday.

Nurge A. C. B. Russell, of tho Waipukurau Hospital staff, is at present spending her annual leave at Hastings.

Miss A. L. Lundon. matron of the Pukcora Sanatorium, left yesterday by car on her annual furlough. Mrs Hodgkinson loft Waipukurau by Thursday morning’s mail train on a fortnight's visit to a sister at Feilding.

Mrs Wade, wife of Mr R. W. Wade, House Manager. Pukcora Sanatorium, left Waipukurau yesterday on a visit to her parents at Masterton. The Rev A. C. McLean, of St. Andrew’s Church, Waipukurau, returned from Auckland yesterday, after attending the Presbyterian General Assembly.

Mr R. G. Croudis, stationmaster of Waipawa, underwent an operation at the Waipukurau Hospital on Thursday and his condition is quite satisfactory.

Nurse V. Cossar, of the staff of the local hospital, is making good progress after being operated on for appendicitis.

On Thursday afternoon the members of St. Mary’s Mothers’ Union en tertained their friends to a garden fete which was held in the Vicarage grounds. The weather was favourable and tho beautiful grounds provided an ideal setting for such a function. The afternoon passed all too quickly with conversation and tho playing of various competitions. The winner of the golf-putting competition was Mrs J. Emslie Reid, Mrs P. Olsen won the ringing the peg, and two guessing com petitions were won by Mesdames E. R. Shetland and J. E. Hall, respectively. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and it was decided that the cakes and other good things which were left over should be donated to tho Abbotsford Children’s Home at Waipawa.

The late Mrs A. Clark (whose death occurred on Thursday) was born in Paisley (Scotland) in 1874, and came to New Zealand in 1901, residing for a time in Dannevirke, later coming to Waipukurau. The funeral obsequies are being held this afternoon. Mr J. H. Hindman, secretary of the Waipukurau District High School Committee, has been elected as secretary to the committee formed in connection with the proposed presentation to Mr F. B. Curd, the retiring hadmaster of the Waipukurau District High School. Messrs IV. G. Bryce (chairman of the School Committee), E. A. Goodger, J, Huntly, Walker and F. V. Ward are responsible for the presentation organisation.

Mails for the South which now close at 5 p.m. will in future be dispatched earlier in consequence of the speeding up of the afternoon train to Palmerston North and Wellington. The future closing hour will bo 4.30 o ’clock.

The Patangata County Council recently purchased 100,000 super feet of Australian hardwood for bridge work.

The Waipukurau Orphans visited the local Hospital on Wednesday evening, and entertained tho patients with a programme of musical iteinn, etc. The orchestra, under musicaldirector Malkin, were present, and in addition to their numbers, Orphans Haldane. Coats, and Boyce contributed' songs,' Orphan Windle a violin solo, and Orphans Chatwin and Ward recitations. At the conclusion of the programme Dr. Reed (medical superintendent) thanked the Orphans on behalf of the patients and Chief Orphan Hall acknowledged his remarks, after which the Matron and nursing staff entertained the Orphans to supper.

The first Presbyterian minister to serve in Waipukurau was the late Rev Alexander Grant who was inducted on March 23rd, 1884. In 1900 the Rev Grant went, to Dannevirke and the Rev 11. W. Johnston moderated the loeal vacancy ponding the arrival of the Rev Thos. McDonald in July of that year. In 1904 the latter moved to Christchurch taking charge of St. Peter’s Church.
