BYRD’S ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
CITY OF NEW YORK LEAVES DUNEDIN TO-DAY.
COMMANDER’S FAREWELL MESSAGE!

Dunedin, Dec. 1. The City of New York leaves about 3 o’clock this afternoon for the Bay of Whales. Commander Byrd, in a farewell message, says: “When I told the people of the United States that we were going to make our departure for the Antarctic from New Zealand 1 soon became aware, from the hundreds of remarks, that the people o)
my country have the highest regard for the people of New Zealand. Since our arrival here we have had every evidence that the friendly spirit of my country is reciprocated. “We have received courtsey and hospitality from all sides and, for my shipmates and myself, I wish to express our deepest appreciation. We are delighted that we decided to make our departure from this country and we will be delighted to get back to it again after our task is completed. “All the members of the expedition extend {heir best wishes to the people of New Zealand. We shall make every effort to uphold the traditions of Scott, Shackleton, Mawson and Amundsen.”
