REP. CRICKET

HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY

POVERTY BAY’S SECOND INNINGS.

A HARD UPHILL FIGHT.

Play in the Hawke Cup preliminary cricket match wae resumed in Napier this morning. Conditions were better than yesterday in that the wind had died down to J light hreeze and was refreshing to the fielding team. Under a clear sky Poverty Bay set about making the 146 to cover the deficiency on the first innings count. Purvitt and Frasei resumed theii innings with 6 runs to their credit. Evans opened the attack with the breeze in his favour. Pirio taking up the cudgels at the opposite end. Batting was very cautious, as the first wicket did not fall until after 30 minutes after the commencement, when Purvitt was given out leg before to Pirie. 19—1—II.

The promising colt, Joe Scholium, took up the stand at the crease, playing very cautiously. When 16 he was dropped by O’Brien in the slips. He was beginning to open out and score rapidly when a well placed swinger by Pirie caught his leg stump after he had been at the crease for 30 minutes. 59—2—26.

Bennett opened his account with a square leg boundary, following it up with a single. The second ball of the neat over he snicked into the padded hands of Lowry. 64—3—5. The next in was Robertson, who scored a single. The pair batted carefully, the scoring being slow. It was two overs later that Fraser tipped Evans into the hands of Pirie at fine slip. The retiring batsman had played a painstaking innings of 87 minutes. 67—4—14.

EVANS BOWLS WELL. The visiting skipper. Reeves, was next to don the pads, Mitchell replacing Pirie in the attack. Robertson opened out and sent the new bowler in his second over to the ooundary twice. In the next over Reeves was clean gowled, to give Evans his third wicket for 29 runs 85—5—4. Robertson was then partnered by Dow. The scoring brightened „p a little and the century was hoisted by Dow sending Evans to the boundary twice after 105 minutes of play. Pine took up the attack again in place of Mitchell, who took over from Evans. The first ball was sent to mid-on. a, d Dow was nearly run but. Three overs later Worker replaced Pirie with the ball. Cow was again lucky to streak home without being run out. Apparently the bowling was to their liking, for the pair scored freely. A succession of singles placed the visitors’ total on the, same mark as tiiat of Hawke's Bay, it having taken 140 minutes to get ahead of the home team’s score. At this stage Reaney replaced Mitchell in the attack for a maiden over. Pirie made his third appearance with the ball, replacing Worker. The third ball was played over by Dow, scattering the bails. The retiring' batsman had been in 50 minutes and knocked up three fours. 148 38. Winter was the next in but he w .s stfll suffering from an injured knee, and Reeves did the running for aim Worker came on again in place of Pirie. being unlucky in not petting Winter’s wicket behind the sticks Shortly afterwards the adjournment waa called with the score reading 155 for the loss of six wickets.
