SELF-RELIANCE
STANLEY BRUCE’S ADVICE.
DON’T LEAN ON GOVERNMENTS
Stanley M. Bruce, Prime Minister of Australia, talking in Sydney recently to delegates ot the Farmers’ and Settlers’ Conference, warned nroducerg that they should not lean on the Government for everything, but should be self-reliant. At the same time he recognized the duty of the Government to the men on the land. •‘Governments can render a measure of assistance,” he said, ‘but the real basis of development and security must come from producers themselves. Do not let Gov. ernments come in and do your marketing for you. That can only end in disaster. ■‘The problem with which we are now faced in this connection—a world-wide problem—is how to bring the living standard of the worker on the land Un to the level of that of the industrial worker in the city.
“An obligation in imposed upon Governments to insure that legislative machinerv is creates by which the primary producer can get longdate credit. This is as necessary to his industry as short-dated credit is to the manufacturing industry. A great deal, has been done in regard to rural credit, but this is another instance in which Governments have legitimatelv tn assist the producer to carry on the business so vital to the community.”
