MOTOR LICENSES

WARNING To LORRY OWNERS.

At the Hastings Court this morning. before Mr A. M. Mow’lem S.M., E. M. Langley and Co.. Ltd., produce merchants, Hastings, were charged, on the information of Bor—--’ | Inspector J. R. Dunnett, with using a motor lorry on the Gisborne road on July 24th without having obtained a heavy traffic license. Mr H Holderness (borough solicitor) represented the borough and Mr E. M. Langley, manager of Langley and Co., conducted the case for the company. The defence was that the lorry was not in use by the company, who had a prospective buyer in view, and who had been informed by a previous in spector that they were entitled to give demonstrations of the lorry on the road to probable, buyers. The lorry was only used in such demonstrations. On the other hand Inspector Dun nett said that he had warned the defendant that that was not in accord with the motor traffic regulations, as a license was necessary if the lorry was used on the road.

E. M. Langley, in his evidence, said that the company had not used the lorry on July 23rd. 24th or 25th. It was not on the road on those days. To His Worship; The lorry had gone from Hastings to Gisborne on July 18th, under jts own power, with witness’s own horses, but it was for demonstration purposes only, under a trader’s demonstration plate, in order to test the lorry for a prospective buyer. That was generally understood among traders. His Worship; Well, if they asked mo I would tell them that it < 'ild not be done. The question of the date does not matter. Tho lorry had travelled to Gisborne and the date can be amended. Mr Holderness applied for permission to amend the date in the information to July 18th. which was granted. After hearing the evidence His Worship pointed ont that the full penalty was £2O. but he would inflict a fine of £lO and costs. £3 4s 6d.
