RECREATION RESERVE
TE AWA LEAGUE’S REQUEST. TO NAPIER HARBOUR BOARD. Messrs Hallett, O’Dowd and Morrison wrote to the Napier Harbour Board yesterday on behalf of the Te Awa Citizens’ League, asking that the area of land about if acres between Napier High School and the Napier South Public School be set aside for recreation purposes. In connection with the above matter the Napier High School Board wrote stating that it did not desire to acquire the site, amt expressed the opinion that the area should be maintained as a reserve as was originally intended. Mr Darling, chairman of the Te Awa Citizens’ League, stated that the area had always been looked upon as a reserve which could become a people’s park. Now that the district was becoming populated such an area for a playground was highly desired. The League were desirous that the board should set the area aside as a recreation reserve. The chairman pointed out that the statement made by the Napier High School Board that it was originally intended that the area should be a reserve was untrue. Ho then outlined the history of the sub-division of the whole area pointing out that it was intended that when a road across the river was necessary it should be a con tinuation of Ellison street. There was no doubt that the proper authorities to control the area in question was the primary school. The whole question was referred back to a committee to confer with the various bodies interested.
