HASTINGS RESERVES
RECENT IMPROVEMENTS ZOO TO BE INCREASED. PROPOSED WORKS FOR OTHER AREAS. A further increase in the population of the Zoo at Cornwall Park is contemplated. At the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening authority was given for the purchase of one pair of Argus pheasants, one pair of Peacock pheasants, two pair of Mandarin ducks and also two pairs of Rhesus monkeys. ’ The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) stated that he had read that the Wellington Zoo curator proposed purchasing the animals for the City Zoo and ho thought that it would be an excellent opportunity for the Hastings Council to work in conjunction with Wellington. This course was agreeable to both parties. Tenders are to be called for seventeen seats to be distributed in the various reserves. THE OTHER RESERVES. Other matters relating to the welfare of the various reserves in the Borough were referred to in the report of the caretaker, whose monthly statement was as follows:—
Bridge Pah.— The following vanities of trees have been planted in Bridge Pah: 10,000 Pinus Radiata, 2000 Eucalyptus, 350 Californian Redwood and 100 Oregon Pines. The fences around the reserve had been repaired.
Ebbett Park.— The ground in front of the Maori House had been dug and was ready for planting. A 6ft. path had been formed along the southern boundary and a 4ft. path had been formed from the south end of the plantation, diagonally, to meet the 6ft. path. The above works have been carried out by unemployed as relief works. The trees ana shrubs along Railway road had been cleaned and the ground dug around them. The acacia trees planted last year in Beatson’s Park have been cleaned and the dead ones replaced. The trees in the north-east corner of the park had been cleaned around, and the hawthorn had been cut out. The hedges at Cornwall Park had been trimmed. The Park tennis courts had been top-dressed and sown.
Railway Road Reserve The caretaker suggested that in view of the contemplated erection of cluster lights, the stone wall and palm now standing at the Heretaunga street end. be removed and a rockery formed in the centre with a path leading in from either side.—Agreed to.
Cornwall Park.— The caretaker suggested that a row of Phoenix palms be planted on either side of the main drive leading from Fitzroy Avenue.—lt was decided that the palms bo ordered for planting in September, and that the preparatory work be gone on with.
