Mrs E. B. Helps left Hastings this morning for Wellington on a visit to her brother, who is ill. Mr. H. Buckleton, general manager of the Bank of New Zealand, returned to Auckland by the Ulimaroa.
Mr. A. Jeffs, an English electrical engineer, arrived by the Ruapehu yesterday in connection with the electrification of the Lyttelton tunnel.
A United Service cable from London reports that the late Viscount Hambledon left an estate valued at £2 500.000.
Lieutenant E. Tregilgas, of the Auckland Artillery Band, has accepted an appointment as conductor of tho Wanganui Garrison Band.
Mr and Mrs R. Mudgway, of Auck land, who have been on a visit to Mr and Mrs Malcolm Newriek, of Has tings, left on their return north this morning.
Captain A. Bongard, M.C., N.Z.8.C., has received notice of his transfer to Gisborne. His duties, in Whangarei will be taken up by Captain A. do T. Neville, R.N.Z.A.. Wellington.
The friends of Mrs G. Mitchell, better known in Hastings by her maiden name of Frances Brien, will learn with regret Jhat she is at present seriously ill in the Palmerston North Hospital.
The engagement is announced of Freda Margaret, youngst daughter of Mr and Mrs D.' Couper, “WaimOe." Otane, Hawke’s Bay, and James, fourth son of Mr and Mrs Neil Dempsey (sen.), Waitoke.
Mr. F. W. Prince, assistant Marine Superintendent of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line, Wellington, has been seriously ill. He is now recuperating and staying with his sister, Mrs. C. D. Pike, Havelock North.
The engagement is announced of Blanche Helena, only daughter of Mr and Mrs. C. D. Stewart, of Gisborne, and formerly of Hawke's Bay, to Stanley Dickson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. James Reeves, of Waingaromia, Tolaga Bay. Mr Walter F. Boyle, United States Consul at Auckland, will leave for a holiday in the United States at tho end ol this month. He expects to bo away from Auckland about four months, and will attend the Grand Pacific Foreign Trade Conference at Los Angeles in September.
Lord Lloyd, High Commissioner for Egypt, arrived in London on Sunday night. During his visit to England Lord Lloyd, together with tho Egyptian Minister of Public Works and representatives of the Soudan Government and of the British Foreign Office will discuss questions affecting the Nile water problem.
Substantial bequests have been made by the late Miss Annie MePlicr son to the Hamilton Beautifying Society and Cathedral. Miss McPherson died on Monday, aged 78. She was a daughter of the late Captain James McPherson, of the Fourth Waikatcs, who settled in Hamilton in 1866. Tho amount of the bequests has not yet been announced.
The death has occurred of a wellknown Auckland resident, Mr J. S. Palmer. Tho deceased gentleman was at one time licensee of wellknown hotels in Wellington, Wanganui and Auckland, and was president for several years of both the Auckland Licensed Victuallers’ Association and the New Zealand Liceucd Victuallers’ Association.
Mr. P. J. Kelleher, formerly chief clerk of the Internal Affairs Department, has been appointed Assistant Under-Secretary of the Department in succession to Mr. G. P. Newton, who was recently appointed Under-Secre-tary, vice Mr. J. Hislop, retired. Mr. J. Bennett now becomes chief clerk, and Mr. D. Ardell has received promotion and will in future be the officer responsible for making arrangements in connection with the reception and entertainment of distinguished visitors to New Zealand.
There passed away in Havelock N. yesterday at the age of 85 years, Mary, relict of the late Mr William Eviso'n. The late Mrs Eivson came to New Zealand in 1868, and resided in Pukahu and Havelock North. She was twice married and leaves a family c-f four children, three girls and one son —Mrs J. Harvey Havelock North; Mrs W. J. Gimblett, Fernhill; Mr H. Crawford. Havelock North; and Miss Evison. She also leaves several gram! children and great grand children. Her husband, who was a farmer at Havelock North, predeceased her 21 years ago. Tho interment will be private.
