The Hamilton' Borough Council resolved to raise an additional loan of £lOOO for unemployed relief works.— Press Assn.

The Dunedin Citv Council decided to wire the Prime Minister, approving of the scheme of daylight saving for tl;e cities.—Press Assn.

It has been decided to form a small holders’ association in connection with the Wairarapa Progress League for the purpose of encouraging small farm settlement in the district and giving practical advice to those intending to take up farming on small holdings.

Fire destroyed a small detached building used as the office of the Eltham Bacon Factory, the property of J. C. Hutton (New Zealand) Ltd., at Eltham at 5 o'clock this morning. The office, furniture and effects were destroyed, and the total loss is about £250. The origin of the fire is a mystery.—Press Assn.

The total number of admissions into the public hospitals in the Dominion during the year 1927 "-as 68,303. There were 4452 patients in hospital at the beginning of the year, the total number of cases dealt with during the year being thus ”‘2.755, equal to a rate of 506 per 10,000 <>f mean population, including Maoris; or, in other words, one out of every 20 persons in the Dominion received some degree of medical treatment in public hospitals in 1927.

The annual general meeting of the Hastings Horticultural Society will be held in the Chamber of Commerce Rooms. Queen street, Hastings, on Friday, August 17, at 8 p.m.

In connection with the free kindergarten, the Hastings Mothers’ Club will hold a jumble sale in the Y.M.C.A. on Saturday. Contributions are invited and will be called for by ringing 'phone 1598.

A Catholic ball will be held in the Clive Public Hall on the evening of Monday, August 13. Railway 'buses will leave Hastings at 7.30 o’clock, returning after the dance.

To-morrow the Magistrate, Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., will hold a special sitting in Hastings to deal with seven cases relating to the sale of fruit in the streets of Hastings. All the cases will be defended.

At the end of March, 1927, the membership of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association was 525. At March 31 of this year it was 704. In 22 associations throughout the Dominion, including Hastings, increases of membership have been shown.

A final reminder is given shareholders in the Hastings StarrBowkett Society of the annual general meeting to be held in the Hawke’s Bay Jockev Club rooms, Market street, to-night, at 8 o'clock, when an appropriation of £5OO by sale will be held in the No. 4 Issue in addition to the usual routine business. Anyone wishing to take up shares in the proposed new issue will be able to do so at the meeting.

The Ladies’ Guild of the Taradale Presbyterian Church held a gift afternoon recently 40 or 70 attending presided over by the Rev. J. Ruprecht. The programme for the afternoon included songs by Mesdames J. Paton, O. Anderson, W. Brown, Messrs. J. Ruprecht and .1. Williamson, while Mrs. Moir pro vided an interesting’ competition which was won by Mrs. Eccles McCutcheon. The exeutive of the guild entertained the visitors with a very dainty afternoon tea, and altogether a very enjoyable time was spent.

The Court of Inquiry into the loss of the Isabella de Fraine on the Hokianga bar, found that there was no available evidence to enable it to find the cause of the schooner’s loss. The vessel was apparently quite seaworthy on leaving Onehunga. There was sufficient water on the bar at the tune', and it was apparently quite safe for a vessel of the Isabella de Fraine’s type to cross. The wind was moderate and the sea was not such as should make the crossing unsafe.

The novelty of a jury panel comprised entirely of Maoris may be a feature of the next session of tho Supreme Court at New Plymouth. In accordance with the provisions of tho Juries Act, it is understood that an application for the privilege of trial by her own countrymen is to be made on behalf of a Maori woman who has been committed for trial on a charge of the manslaughter of an adopted girl (states an exchange). Should the application be granted the lengthy proceedings of translatEnglish into Maori and vice versa will be necessary throughout the case. This will apply even to the addresses of counsel and the Judge’s summing up.

The annual hall held by the Meeanee Lodge 1.0.0. F. M.U., in the Taradale Town Hall last night was a decided success. The large gathering spent a pleasant evening, the floor being first-class, and music by the Denza orchestra all that could be desired. The hall was attractively decorated with flags kindly lent by the Napier Soldiers’ Chib, and effective lighting arrangements were carried out by Mr. Larsen. A feature of the evening was a number of spotlight dances. In the suppei room the tables presented a fine sight, being prettily decorated with almond blossom and early spring blooms by Mrs. F. O. Anderson. The energetic secretaries, Miss K. Cullen and Mr. C. H. White, together with the social committee, are to be complimented upon the excellence of the arrangements.
