11,000 Visit Battlefields

Prince of Wales to lake Salute [British Official Wireless.] (Received 8, 11.30 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 7. Eleven thousand people from all parts of Britain are taking part in a pilgrimage to the battlefields, during which they are billeted in towns and villages in the area affected by the late war.

The main event of yesterday was a visit to Vimv Ridge, around which some of the most severe fighting of the war was experienced 1 . The central feature of the pilgrimage will be the ceremony to-mor-row at the Menin Gate, Ypres. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales will take the salute in the great march past.. THE PRINCE’S RECEPTION. I British official Wireless.! (Received 8, 11.30 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 7. The Prince of Wales landed in France to-day to visit the battlefields of the Great War. Arriving at Boulogne, he was received at the quayside by Major Horten, the Mayor and a bodv of local British Legionmen. He was greeted with loud cheers, which he smilingly acknowledged. After lunching simply at the station ref eshment buffet with General Trottor. he proceeded by motor car to St. Omer, the old British General Headquarters, and Bethune. WELCOME AT BETHUNE.

At Bethune His Royal Highness was again welcomed with the greatest enthusiasm, not only by the pilgrims but by the local populace. In the Market Square. Admiral of the Fleet Lord Jellicoe, president of the British Legion, received the Prince on a dais, which was bedecked with British and French flags. It has been erected in front of the famous belfry of Bethune. As the Prince reached the square he was received with 11 fanfare of trumpets. His Royal Highness thanked the reception committee of the departments of the Somme and the Pas de Calais for the arrangements which they had made for the reception of th= British pilgrims. The Prince later went on to Lille, where he will stay the night. He proceeds to-morrow to Ypres to attend the great memorial service at the Menin Gate.
