(British Official Wireless.)
(Received 5, 11.30 a.m.) Rugby, Sept. 4. When the Indian regiments of the Jhansi Brigade, who were the first British troops to arrive in Shanghai as part of the defence force, left that port for India yesterday they received an international send-off. General appreciation has been widely expressed of their services during the severe winter and in extremely the trying circumstances when tho settlement was in danger of being overrun by the defeated Chinese soldiers.
Yesterday the American Marines, Japanese, and Italians, cheered the departing troops enthusiastically from the wharf.
An overnight cable stated:—The Canton Government arrested leading bankers and merchants, demanding 10,000,000 dollars to carry on the fight again the North. All the Chinese banks involved will be invaded by soldiers until the money is forthcoming. It is understood bankers are yielding to the pressure.
