Rugby Football

H.B. UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The management committee of tne Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union met last night in Napier. Present: Messrs «i. W. Norrie (chairman), R. 11. Milburn, H. V. Phillips, W. D. Corbett, B. Tweedie, J. W. Callaghan, W. O’Neill, J. G. McLean, N. McKenzie, A. W. H. King, andH. Brown. Air A. Bowman, the new president, was warmly welcomed to the meeting by the chairman. COVERING OLD STAND. Mr Milburn raised the question of the possibility of the old stand on McLean Park being covered in. Several members thought that it would be unsafe to roof it as the strain would be too great. Mr Callaghan stated that the engineer had advised on the roofing of the stand, but the Council would not agree to it. It would be merely a waste of money repairing an old stand like that. The discussion then urojipeu. INSURANCE FUND. The chairman stated, in regard to the insurance fund, that ctaring the season the sum of £lO5 had been received, while £lll had been paid out. Mr AlcKenzie said that the Union did not wih to make a? profit out of the fund, and he would like to see the same fee fixed as last season’s. It was finally decided that the fee for the coming season should be the same as last. BLACK AND WHITE SHIELD. The matter of the allocation or points from the Black and White Shield was discussed on a recommendation from the annual meeting. Air Callaghan held that the present system of alloting points was unfair, as some clubs had four teams while others only had three. He strongly favoured the percentage system. Air MecKenzie said that it scemct? to him as though every one had forgotten that the shield was given to encourage football. Mr Callaghan gave notice of motion for the next meeting as follows: — “That the points for the Black and White Shield be alloted on the percentage system.” SUB-COMAHTTEES APPOINTED. The following sub-committees wertr appointed for the coming season: —Finance, Messrs J. W. Norrie, J. W. Callaghan and A. W. H. King; programmes,Messrs J. W. Norrie, N. McZenzie and 11. V. Phillips; stands, Messrs Hewitt, A. King, J. W. Norrie ana W. Corbett; results, Messrs Ji. Milburn and H. V. Phillips; fixtures, Messrs H. Seed, N. AlcKenzie and B. Tweedie. GATE CHARGES TO REAIAiN THE SAME. Speaking on the question of gate charges, Air Callaghan said that now the Union was in a strong financial position it might give consideration to its regular patrons. The “gates” for the past season for club games had been a record, and the Union had reaped the viously. GENERAL. The application of the Wallingford Club to play under the Waipawa Subunion was refused. _ The application of J - P- King for reinstatement to Rugby from League was referred to the New Zealand Union. | An honorarium of £•> was granted to i benefit. He had heard an accusation • against the Union that the gate ’ were too high, and he thought some , consideration should be given to those supporters who week after week atten-

ded the matches. He then moved that the charge be reduced from Js to 6d, and that ladies be charged the same. Air King seconded the motion, Mid enorsed the mover's remarks. Air Brown thought that it was all very well for Napier, and asked about the position regarding Hastings. He stated that it would affect the subunion as far as the honorary members were concerned. Air W. O’Neill opposed the reduction, and said that when the gate fee was raised to Is no one complained. The motion was opposed by several other members, and on being put to the meeting -was lost, and it was decided that the charges be the same as preMAORI TOUR OF FRANCE. (Received 10, 1.15 p.m.) London, April 9. The Rugby Union committee discussed the forthcoming Maori tour of France. It. was stated that the union was not concerned with the tour in any way, and no representative matches would he played, but, subject to the union receiving proper assurances that the financial arrangements of the tour were in accord with the amateur laws of the game, it announced that there would be no objection to English county and dub sides playing against the Maoris. BOXING. The committee meeting of the Hawke's Bay Boxing Association was held in Hastings last night, Air. Al. Johnson in the chair. After transacting routine business and passing various accounts, it was decided to hold the annual meeting on Tuesday evening, April 20, m the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club room's, when an endeavour will be made to resuscitate the interest m tne sport through the district.
