BEAUTIFUL HAVELOCK

IMPROVEMENTS DECIDED ON. Considerable discussion took place at last night’s meeting f the Havelock North Town Board with regard to tne need of smartening up the centre of Havelock. The matter arose when it was proposed to ask the caretaker of the cemetery to put in 'some time on the Town Board work. Mr Penlington said he appreciated a recent letter in the “Tribune” re cleaning up the village and thought it was written in a very reasonable spirit. He personally inspected the village and detailed a number of things which needed attention, such as broken fences, empty benzine tins and other rubbish. Even their own Town Board premises needed attention, and they should certainly set a good example. He also advocated putting limestone on the footpath from the “Tribune” agency to Macdonald’s store. Also a row of trees could be planted from Messrs W. Whyte an?? Co’s store to Nimon’s bridge. They certainly needed the use of a man to brighten up the village. The chairman was glad the matter had been brought up. ’ They must try and do this work in the course of the present year. After a long discussion, it was decided to call tenders for putting limestone on the footpath from the bridge on rim Hastings road to the Post Office, and from the “Tribune” agency to Mr Macdonald’s store, and from Messrs Eastaugh and Treneman garage to the War Memorial. This was carried unanimously. The chairman also suggested placing a kerb in front of the shops. It wns decided to leave this matter until the ; next meeting. . Messrs Penlington and Graham s mo- I tion that a man he put <”> to colleel waste paper on the streets, eut goss and thistle growing on the footpath and elean up the garden around the Rest House was carried unanimously. Mr Penlington also drew attention to tn» loose shingle on the roads, and ragged that limestone could be mixed with it to help bind it. Mr .Toll thought limestone wou u make all the difference m the world to the roads. It was decided to put a mixture on the eorW of Nimon-s bridge as an experiment.
