Russian Monasticism

Its Abolition Ordered MONKS MUST REPUDIATE VOWS. MORE SOVIET BEFOBMS. (By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.] (Received 29, 9.10 a.m.) London, March 28. “The Times’ ” Riga correspondent says that the self-styled holy synod at Moscow’, representing the lied branch ot tiie Russian orthodox Church, has decided, apparently under the Soviet’s instructions, to abolish Monasticism,, declaring it bad outlived its purpose and did not reflect modern ideas, therefore the Monks must repudiate their vows and adopt a useful livelihood. It is pointed out that since 1923 many monasteries have continued obscurely, keeping within the law by organising as working communities. The Soviet seized Saint Izaao’s Cathedral at Leningrod because at night rowdies stole external bronze ornamentations. It is believed the Soviet itself despoiled the Cathedral as a pretext for the seizure.— (‘ ‘Times.’’)
