AMERICA CUP YACHT RACE.

STR T. LIPTON TO TRY AGAIN. London, March 27. Sir Thomas Lipi ton is going to America next week. He intends to build Shamrock V. and issue a challenge for a race for the America, Cup in ,1927. He says he will keep at it till ho wins.—-(A. n and N.Z.)

HISTORY OF THE CUP RACES. The American Cup is a 100-guinea cup put up by the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes in 1851. and won bj’ tlie yacht America. Since then British yachts have crossed the Atlantic on numerous occasions and made fruitless attempts to regain the trophy. The dates and results of the races are:— » 1870. —British yacht Cambria came tenth • 1871. —British yacht Livonia won one race out of a series of five. 1876.—Canadian yacht Countess of Dufferin lost in two races against the Madeline. 1881.—Canadian Atalanta was beaten by the Mischief. Between 1882 and 1893. the Puritan beat the Genesta the Mayflower beat the Galatea, and the Volunteer beat the Thistle. 1893.—Vigilant beat Lord Dunraven’s Valkyrie 11. 1895.—Defender heat Valkyrie 111. 1899.—Columbia beat Shamrock (Royal Ulster Yacht Club) in three races. 1901.—Columbia beat Shamrock IT. in three races. 1903.—Reliance beat Shamrock 111. 1914.—Shamrock IV. wont to America. but the war caused postponement of the contest. 1920.—Resolute beat Shamrock IV. The course is thirty miles in length, loading out into the Atlantic and back to the starting point near Sandy Hook.
