SOMEONE ELBE’S CHEQUE. THREE MEN SENTENCED. A charge of stealing a. cheque valued at £5, the property of James Hawkins, at Hastings, on November 20. was preferred against Henry Girling Arnold, Sydney Claude Paget, and Michael Holden, at tho Hastings Magistrate’s Court this morning before Mr. R, W. Dyer. S.M.
Sergeant Hogan prosecuted, and the accused, who pleaded guilty, were not represented. Sergeant Hogan in outlining the circumstances, said that a. Maori woman, Airs Hawkins, lost a cheque in the street. She went to the bank and stopped its payment a few minutes after 10 o’clock, but the cheque had then been cashed at Roachs’ store and lodged in tho bank. The three accused had found the cheque and Holden had taken it into Roachs’ shop and cashed it. When arrested the men had £3 19/10 between them. Holden was not known to tho police, but the other two had bad records. , Holden was sentenced to one month s hard labour and Arnold and Paget to six months’ hard labour
