Immigration
CANADIAN PLANS. FOR INCREASED NUMBERS. Ottawa, Nov. 23. Figures compiled by the Department of Immigration show a marked reduction in the number of immigrants to Canada. It is understood the Government is negotiating an agreement with the British Government under which it hopes to secure an increase. This agreement calls for further aid to settlers and holds out other inducements on a larger scale than previously, details of which will probably bo announced after the opening of Parliament. It is believed it will be an enlargement of the scheme under which the British Government has assisted intending settlers, while the Canadian Government provides the land.
Another new policy will be operated in co-operation with the railway companies, which are now empowered to grant certificates to immigrants certifying their suitability for agriculture or other proposed industry, which formerly were only obtainable from Government officials, but the Department of Immigration still conducts the health and financial tests. —(A. and N.Z.)
