STORM TOSSED BARQUE.
A TH 111 LL INGEXPERIENCE. (Received 4, 9.50 a.m.) Sydney May 4. The barque Hamburg, which left Melbourne for the United Kingdom wheat-laden on April 18th, returned to Sydney from a thrilling experience. After rounding New Zealand 300 miles off the Bluff, she struck a violent gale and stripped her canvas. This continued for several days, there being mountainous seas. Then the rudder snapped and the ship became out of control. The barque was knocked about bv the gale, and it was impossible to make repairs. On the third day the weather moderated and the crew, who were mostly composed ofi German apprentices succeeded, with much difficulty, in rigging a jury steering gear. Taking advantage of a favourable taut wind the captain decided to make for Sydnethough New Zealand was nearer, sailing with a jury rudder nearly 1000 miles. Fortunately the cargo did not shift, otherwise the vessel would have been doomed.
