May Day
Demonstrations in London NO SERIOUS TROUBLE. CALL AT BULGARIAN LEGATION. By Cable— Preu Association—Copyright. London, May 1. May Day demonstrations passed oil without serious trouble owing to precautions taken by the police, who arrested about IUO supposed agitators. Ten thousand marched in procession to Hyde Park to participate in an international carnival. The demonstration was principally rcmancable for the number of children carrying the red flag, and the foreign element, especially Jewish, who were unusually conspicuous, while a small body of Asiatics marched under a banner demanding a free India. At the conclusion of the demonstration the procession marched to the Bulgarian Legation, where, amid the singing of the “Red Flag," a protest was presented against the alleged persecution of Bulgarian workers. The crowd outside was regaled with speeches by its leaders, including one by Mr BeuTillet, M.P. A slight melee resulted in the police clearing the pavement amid booing. A Bulgarian officer, replying to the protest declared that the stories of oppression were mailiciously spread and were unworthy of credence. —(Reuter). QUIET OBSERVANCE ON THE CONTINENT. RECRIMINATION IN GERMANY. London, May 1. Messages from the Continent report May Day was generally observed very quietly. The French authorities took most remarkable precautions in Paris, including countless police patrols and also spotting aeroplanes, but fears of disorders arising from the recent discovery of most violent Communist documents were dispelled by snow, sleet and hail keeping industrialists indoors. The “Daily Herald’s" Berlin corro* pondent states that there was a general cessation of work. Countless processions and speakers throughout the L country mostly assailed Hindenburg’s ’ election as the high water mark of tbo reactionary tide, but the Socialists in Berlin devote most of their time to 1 bitter attacks on the Communist party. The -Communists, returning the compliment, blamed the Social Democrats for the triumph of reaction. —(A. and N.Z.)
