SHOOTISTS AT TRENTHAM RAIN INTERFERES ON SATURDAY Trentham, May 2. • u 0 1! P ro ft res s was made to-day with tho rifle meeting, despite tho fact that an early adjournment was necessary owing to rain, which had threatened all day, but held off till a little after three o’clock. The final stage of the Opening Match (600 yards) was completed, then the 500 yarejs range of tho Marlborough and a single range of tho Canterbury Match were pushed through by one o’clock. The shooting was interesting and produced many good scores, although an exasperatingly tricky wind baffled a number of men and the varying light affected elevation. After lunch the 300 yards of the Marlborough Match was tackled and got, through with difficulty, the later men being hampered by a drizzle and poor light. A start was made also with the 300 yards range of tho Auckland Match, but only two or three men had completed their shoots when the ram camo on heavily and firing ceased for th© day at 3.30. The shoot range of tho Marlborough Match produced some very hot scoring. The winner. Mills (Kiwi), got on a possible and 49 at 500 yards. Dowa!(J (Opaki) notched two 49’s. James (.Napier), Boon (Karori) and J. Feast (Greytown) each got all into t he bull at 300, while Soper (Taumarina) and Goldfinch (Wollmgton Navals) did the same at 600 yards. During the afternoon Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence, paid a visit to tho range and was shown round tho mounds by Colonel Hughes, executive officer. Further reMARLBOROUGH MATCH. BRATHWAITE WINS THE BELT. The above competition took place during the week-end on tho Coleman Range. The weather conditions were good and some very meritorious scours were recorded. President L. E. Brathwaite put up an excellent score of 220 out of possible j 250. and won the belt for the second i time and also a trophy of £2. He I was closely followed by Rflm H C Russell who registered 214 aiid took' the Bone Cup and trophy of £l. I Both these riflemen have put un ex. I cellent shooting this season. Rflm. H. C. Russell winning the A Grade aggregate and Pres. L. I'.’. Brathwaite being the runner-up. Tho Junior Grade was won bv Rflm. W. S. Candv with a score of 2.13. He takes the Campbell Cup and trophy £1 10s. This young rifleman has shot consistently throughout the season and •at times brilliantly. His score of 49 out of 50 at 500yds was an excellent performance, and if he continues as he has begun there is no doubt that he will be heard from in the future on the firing mounds at Trentham.
