M.A.C.. in their striking nine jerseys, instituted an offensive but their play was ragged and lacked combination, notwithstanding their willingness and decided tackling. The blacks, though not by any means playing a brilliant game themselves, which after all was not to be expected in the circumstances, outclassed the blues in some very fine bits of passing movements and displayed more method and direction throughout, which began to 1 early in the game, when Kivell, in a long kick, sent the ball against a goal post, and following up, with practically no opposition, he scored a “gift,” Stevenson adding the crowning points. Continuing the pressure the Pirates went strong and. Lockwood, who played a dashing game, took the ball and after a fine run, passed to Laley, who knocked it back to him, enabling him to cross over. Yates did the trick at goal, thus making the blacks 10. Soon after, Yates, from a penalty for off side, sent the leather over the bar, raising the Pirates to 13. Thence forward. though the blues fought hard, the blacks held their opponents in hand and, in a forward rush Smith nassed to Antiss. who transferred to R. Kivell, who sent to Russell, the latter getting over. The try was not converted and the first spell ended: Pirates 1G to M.A.C. nil. On changing sides, M. Smith replaced Charles, who was knocked out. The Pirates had it all their own way foi the rest of the game and, from a kick from three-quarter way. the ball went over, where the blue back fumbled and Daley scored. Stevenson goaling. Pirates 21. Then Kivell scored from a scramble near the line, Yates making a miss at goal, Russell getting an easy try soon after, which Stevenson converted. bringing the blacks’ score to 29. At this stage R. Kivell was hurt and he left the field. In qufok succession Russell and Yates each secured an unconverted try and Wylie scored behind the posts. Smith goaling and the bell went with Pirates 40 against M.A.C’s clean sheet. Mr G. Maddison was in charge. H. 5.0.8. (13) v. Hastings (6). The defeat of Hastings by the High School Old Boys was a great surprise. Although Hastings were the aggressors 1 for the greater part of the game they failed to finish off their many promising movements. Faulty handling and holding the ball accounted for their defeat. Several attempts at goals from easy positions were missed. Hastings opened the game briskly, but were shortly driven back to their own 25. where Mardon took a mark in front of the goal, but failed with an easy kick. Tn an exciting struggle near the lino H. Batchelor secured the ball and fell i on it on the line. Rickets converted. I Hast inns were led to attack by Beuth, who passed out to C. Brownlie, who. after making a great run through, was brought down only a yard from the line The Old Boys, putting up a sound defence, were able to break down the vigorous nttnok of their opponents, and gradually carried the play into mid-field. N. Grenside tried to reverse matters, and put in some fine work, but was not well supported. The Old Boys continued their pressure down the field and mishandling bv the Hastings full hack let McNeil follow up a I short kick to score near the posts without trouble. Rickets converted. Has- i tings now took a turn and pressed Old Boys into their own 25. Brownlie played up well but was too well marked to open the play up. B. Grenside failed with a free kick and his brother, following up quickly, beat the white backs for possession and scored well out. Mitchell’s kick failed. Hastings again pressed hard, but good tackling kept tnem out. Just before half time Austin. Mardon and South, combined in a smart rush which sent the ball into touch. On changing over Hastings continued their aggressive play, Brownlie and B Grenside being very prominent. Tn a rush over the whites’ line Mitchell got across but was not able to touch down. Shortly afterwards the Old Boys were penalised and B. Grenside just missed a splendid attempt to goal from half way. The white forwards combined and broke away, but a wild pass foiled the movement. South then secured and cut in nicelv and broke through the opposition, Smith finishing off the more< ment by scoring near the posts. Rick, ets's kick went wide. For a time a very hard game ensued, the Hastings forwards playing with great dash. C. Brownlie made a great effort and struggled through beating off several opponents, but lost possession near the line. Batchelor, securing, sent the plav back to half way. Ellingham. securing from the scrum sent his hacks awav but faulty handling robbed them of a sure try. From another movement anion" the Hastings bacfcß B. Grenside secured and broke through to score near the corner. Mitchell’s ; kick failed. Hastings forwards put in ■

another fine rush down the field.. Brownlie, gaining possession, attempt-1 ed to score, but was brought down. The whistle then sounded, the game ending- H. 5.0.8 13. Hastings 6. Mr P. R Smyrk ably controlled the game. M. 8.0.8. (15) v. Havelock (3). Marist Brothers Old Boys and Havelosk North played on McLean Park, but gave rather a. disappointing exhibition, tho game being for the greater part a ragged forward struggle. Soon after the opening tho green forwards had the visitors in trouble. Their defence soon gave way and let a forward rush, led by Gemmell, through, who scored under the posts. Nehemia converted. Havelock then rallied and sent tho greens back to their line, giving them an anxious time. A number of free kicks were awarded them, but several shots at goal failed to materialise. After a time Marists renewed • their attack and Gemmell secured and I made for tho blues’ line. Near the j posts ho was brought down, hut A. • Swainson, snapping up, got across. Nohernia’s kick was successful making ■ tho half time score 10—nil. After changing over Barney played ' up prominently.
