Hindenburg’s Wooden Effigy SOLO FOR FIREWOOD. AN AMUSING DISCOVERY. (By Cable-Preu Association—Copyright.) (Received 2, 8.45 a.m.) Berlin, May 1. The Nationalists desired to celebrate Hindenburg’s election by restoring his wooden 120-feet effigy erected in Berlin in war time, in which patriots paid for the privilege of driving nails. A diligent investigation revealed that the statue was sold to an architect after the war for a shilling's worth of paper marks, and a wood merchant purchased it and cut it into firewood.—(Sydney “Sun” cable). THE REICH BUDGET. Berlin, April 30. Germany’s net budgetary surplus last year was 334 million marks. The Finance Minister, Herr von Schlieben, in his Budget speech in tho Reichstag, estimated next year’s expenditure at 4900 million marks and revenue at 4652 million. He proposed to increase the beer and tobacco excise to meet the deficit.—(A. and N.Z.)
