BOWLING.

ST. LEONARDS. St. Leonards led the Hastings bowling duos when they opened lor the season on their beautiiul green last Saturday, a large number of bowlers and visitors being present to mark the occasion. The green was in tip-top t order and its condition reflected the . highest credit on the caretaker. Mr. H. M, Campbell, patron of the club, in a brief address, thanked the members for again electing him as patron and, alluding to Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada, he said he hoped if tho members were called upon to meet an enemy whq threatened landing on New Zealand shores while they were engaged in a game of bowls, they would first engage the enemy at home and afterwards meet the invaders and. beat them off. Mr. F. M. Cohr, president of the club, then extended a welcome to l all, hoping they would spend a very pleasant afternoon- Mrs Cohr sent up the first bowl and the green was declared open for the season. The croquet lawn was occupied by the lady players in a one-bail break competition, which was won by Mrs Crichton, and a golf croquet competition, won by Mrs Lincoln. The bowling resulted as follows Emmerson Poiuton, Esson and King Ueat Cron in’, McVicar, Storkey and Evans, 19 —18. I Rice, Benton, McLean and Venabies beat Gardner. Hay Anderson, Pickering and Knight beat Monks, Preston-Thomas, Lockhead and Ricketts. 22—16Turner, Shannon, Warren and Watson beat Day, Owen, Keith and Steven.
