The love New Zealand has for its instrumental bands, and the very liberal (support that is accorded, them by the public, has evidently greatly impressed Air. Partington, conductor of the Redfern (Sydney) Band. Speaking at a social given in that band’s honour by the Ist Canterbury Mounted Rifles’ Band in Ashburton, Air. Partington said it was an eye-opener to him that bands were taken so much notice of in this country and treated so well. Public financial support, or support from local bodies, in Australia was very meagre in comparison. The Redfern Aluuicipal Council had donated the “magnificent” sum of £l2 10/- towards the band’s trip to New Zealand. But not for nothing! AVlien the band returns it has to give concerts for three months to make up for it, said Air. Partington, amidst laughter. Esk,>who fell while leading his men at the Gate Pa, and after whom the town of Hamilton was named, has come from the commander’s son in England, who intends visiting New Zealand this year.

The evidence of six witnesses was taken at any inquiry at Dunedin into the death of Kenneth AVhite, a watersider, who was killed by a sling of cargo on the Kaikoura on Alarch 2. The evidence showed that the ball of the Harbour Board crane caused an unexpected swing of the sling in the hold, after it had been landed and was ready, for hoisting. Deceased was struck on the head and died in the hospital. The crane was working cargo on the offside of the vessel, while the ship’s winches were working the near side in the same Jiold, and the Government Inspector of Ships said he would have stopped the work had he known this was going on. The coroner (Mr. H. AV. Bundle) said that where two gangs were working every care should be taken to ensure the safety of the men. and it seemed that where a crane was working the offside and the ship’s gear the inside there was apt to be danger. He found that deceased died from shock, following injuries received by being crushed by slings, while working on the port side of the Kaikoura on March 2.
