AN IMPERIAL QUESTION
London, March 13. Sir J. D. Connolly, writing to th* press, .emphasises the necessity in the interests of defence of peopling Kimberley, which is now the gateway to the East. The harbours, rivers, and fertile lands invite invasion of the country, which would provide sustenance for the invaders. If once inside they would require a hundredfold stronger army to expel them. Population was the surest and cheapest defenee.—(A. and N.Z.)
