C.P. GOERZ DEAD.
A GREAT OPTICIAN
Berlin, Jan. 15. Herr Carl Paul Goerz. founder of the anions firm of optical instrument makers. died on Sunday at his villa in the Trunewald.
Carl Paul Goerz. the famour maker if optical instruments and a Kommerzienrat of Russia, was born in Brandenburg in the early fifties, the son of i prison official. Unlike Carl Zeiss, if Jena, be was not himself a man of <igh scientific training, but began in a, small way as a seller of spectacles and magnifying glasses. He employed nen of high training and in 1881 .ounded the house of C. P. Goerz. which soon acquired a world-wide Jrepuuaiioii for the quality of its lenses. He nade field-glasses, gun-sights, highpower lenses, and many other varieties of optical instruments. During the war he added to a fortune that was already considerable, and did great ser- . vice to the optical departments of the German Army and Navy.
