ARGENTINA’S NAVY.

(To tho Editor.) Sir,—The statement in a London cable, dated March 17th, that hitherto all Argentina’s naval craft have been built in Britain is very inaccurate, though not perhaps of any great importance, as the following figures with, regard to the 31 Argentine warships built, or ordered, since 1894 (including 14 vessels sold to other Powers), will show: —

Less than 12 per cent, of the total tonnage was built in Great Britain, though it is true that most Argentine warships over 28 years of age (not included above), are British built, but they must now be obsolete and cannot total much over 17,000 tons. The two Argentine battleships launched in the United States in 1911 are still amongst the largest afloat, though inferior in gun power to the best British American and Japanese battleships. I am. yours etc., R H F Havelock North, March 20th, 1922.

Built in Vessels Total tonnage United States 2 58,000 Italy 6 42,000 Great Britain 11 14,490 Germany 8 10,400 Franco 4 4,400 Totals 31 129,290
