A London cable announces the death of Lieut.-General Sir Gerard Smith, ex-Governor of AVestralia, 1895-1900. Dr. C. Chilton and Mr. C. A. Ewen have been appointed members of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, Mr. SV. F. Marsh, Commissioner of Crown Lands, who has been absent in Gisborne for several days on business in connection with his department, returned to Napie rthis morning. Mr. A. H. O’Keefe (Dunedin) has been commissioned by the Government to paint the portrait of the late Sergeant Donald Forrester Brown, V.C., (Oamaru), for the National War Museum collection. The portrait will be in oils, half-length, life-size. Mr. R. Wallwork, A.R.C.A., Art Master at Canterbuy College School of Art, Christchurch, has been appointed to paint the potrait of the late Sergeant Forsyth, V.C. (Wellington.

Private advice has been received in Christchurch, says the ‘'Press,” of the marriage of Airs. Helene Cross to Mr. G. D. Greenwood, of Teviotdale. The wedding took place at St. Saviour’s Church. Sydney, the Rev. P. Greenwood officiating. After the ceremony the guests were entertained at dinner at the Australia, those present including Mr. and Mis. Harold Greenwood, late of Netherwood, Gmihi. Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood are at present touring Queensland. A colonist of 61 years, Mr. Davi 1 .May, died at Ouehunga at the age of 89. He came to New Zealand in the ship Hastings, landing at Wellington in 1859. From there he came on to Auckland and was engaged in the carrying business. Subsequently he went on to the land at Hillsboro. During the AA’aikato War, Mr. May was one of those who fought in defence of the colony. Deceased has been a widjwer for thirty years. Three daughters, 48 grand-children and 11 great grandchildren survive him.
