AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.
ESTABLISHED AT LEVIN. THE HOWARD BEQUEST. A deputation representing educational bodies and local authorities in Hawke’s Bay waited on the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W. Nosworthy) yesterday with reference to the establishment of an agricultural college in accordance with the provisions of the bequest made by the late Josiah Howard.
The deputation, which was introduced by Mr. Hunter, M.P., asked that the revenue from the estate should be used for establishing an agricultural college in a central position; that is, if the Howard Estate itself were not suitable for this purpose. A statement had been circulated that the Government proposed to cut up the property and sell it and establish the college ' elsewhere.
Mr Noeworthy said there was no intimation in the late Mr Howard’s will in any form whatever that he wanted the money spent to establish a college in the Hawke’s Bay district. As Minuter for Agriculture, he quite agreed with the necessity for an agricultural and after very careful consideration, looking at the matter from a broad point of view, he bad made up his mind to spend the money in the North Island, and the college would be established at the Weraroa Experimental Farm, Levin. There first-class land would be available for the college. If they had to buy land in Hawke’s Bay they would not have sufficient money left to establish a satisfactory college. He preferred to see the work done properly at Weraroa, rather than have a poorly-equipped college in Hawke’s Bay.—“ Manawatu Times. ’ ’
