SESSION OPENS. CIIECK ING PROFITF.ERING. • . Capetown. March 19. The new Parliament met and r<‘ elected Mr. Krige Speaker. The Governor-General in his speech did not refer io the political situation. He announced proposals to chock profiteering, secure fair rents, deal with . currency and banking reform, the housing question, also measures to secure hrtustr-.m peace and the co-operation of em ployees and workers through joint, councils ; regulation of hours, wages and to foster development of industries ; programme of railway construction : irrigation and expansion and reform in native administra. tion. . .
A monster demonstration o. women of all classes tvnd colours, numbering several thousands, passed a resolution against the high cost ol living, and then marched in pscicession to Parliament, where the Premier addressed them, stating that Bills dealing with profiteering, speculation in foodstuffs, corners and combines would be introuuced immediately.
