BATTLE ON RIGA SECTOR.
RESEMBLES A “VERDUN.”
[ AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASS'N] London, Feb. 12. The “Daily Mail’s” Petrograd correspondent says, that. the Russians hold all their gains on the Riga on a front of seven miles. The Germans concentrated all their available forces in attempts to dislodge them. The. heaviness of the enemy losses recalled the Battle of Verdun. The Russians are holding the Babit Tirul line and threaten Mitau and the whole German left flank. An army order found on prisoners advised the eating of crows as an excellent nutritious food.
FIGHTING ON THE DNIESTER.

They penetrated our trenches but were afterwards driven out. The enemy crossed the ice on the Dniester and pressed back our field posts. . . We counter-attacked, regaining the position. THE GERMAN STORY. [“admiralty per wireless press.”] (Received 13, 11.30 a-.m.) London, Feb. 12. A German, official messages states :—We advanced at Duena and Kiselin. DISPOSITION OF ENEMY FORCES. Th’e “Morning Post’s” Petrogi art correspondent says it is officially' estimated that the enemy forces on the thousand miles, of . the ■ Russian front average a division to every six miles, on the French front a division to every four miles, on the Salonika front a division to ev< iv fourteen miles. The latest German peace method is to send fire balloons into the Russian lines, when the blazing re-, leases leaflets printed in Russian Polish and Tartar. |
