WAIPAWA.

(Own Correspondent). The AVaipawa Brass Band Society rendered a programme of music in the main street on Saturday night, and also on Sunday afternoon which was much appreciated. At the. latter concert the march, “Scipio” (Handel); was a. fine item. The band has been engaged to play for the Porangahau Patriotic sports -on Alarch 3rd, also Makaretu sports on Afarcb 17th, and are assisting the AVaipukurau Band at the Takapau sports oil the 28th inst. At the January meeting of the Borough Council a remit was received from the Petone Council asking support to a resolution passed by that body that increased pay be made to men of the Motor Boat Patrol Service. This was endorsed by the Waipawa Borough Council, and the Minister of Defence advised accordingly, and in reply, the Hon. J. Allen states as follows. “The men who enlisted in this branch did so voluntarily and with a full knowledge of the conditions. That being so he did not see his way to recommend to the Government that they should be [daced on the same basis as men of our reinforcements. The letter continued “At the outbreak of war a number of Imperial Reservists left the Dominion to rejoin the colours, and the Government decided as an act of to make up the pay of the married men to equivalent to that paid to the N.Z. Expeditionary Force. This was done solely for the purpose of providing for the wives and children of such men, who themselves. receive no direct benefit. In agreeing to the adoption of a similar course in the case of married members of the Alotor Boat Patrol Service, the Government was merely following the principle. It does not seem right to me that the men can have any reasonable ground for complaint,. and indeed I have had no complaint from them.”
