AUSTRALIA. WESTRALIAN POLITICS. (Received 7, 9.45 a.m.) Perth, Feb. 6. The Trades Hall has organised a Labour Solidarity Committee to assist the Federal Government in recruiting and to oppose the expulsion of labour members who have not violated the principles of the labour movement. In the Assembly, on the absence of the country members, the Labour party, by 17 to 16, deleted the vital clauses in the State Trading Concerns Bill. The Premier has asked the Governor for dissolution. NOTES FROM VARIOUS STATES [AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASfl’Nl Out of fifty-two Municipal Councils approached, thirty seven decided to co-operate in an endeavour to repeal the Daylight Saving Act. The Commonwealth issue is £46652,172 and the gold reserve £16,149,307. At a meeting of business men Mr. W. M. Hughes motioned that a Russian-Australian bureau of commerce would be established with the object of fostering trade between the two countries.

MILITARY SERVICE BOARD. SITTING AT NAPIER. SECOND BALLOT MEN. The Military Service Appeal Boftrd (Wellington District), comprising Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., (Palmerston North), Messrs T. A. Bauinher (Wanganui), and F. Curtice (Wellington), sat at Napier this morning. Captain Cowlishaw (Christchurch) represented the Military authorities and Mr. E. A. Burr was secretary of the Board. The cases dealt with were confined to the Second ballot. DANIEL O’BRIEN. Daniel O’Brien, clerk, employed at Borthwick and Sons, appealed on the grounds that, he had two brothers at the front, he was the only son at home, and his father (aged 02) had lost his right arm. The father said his son was the only child at home. “If,” he said, “all the boys were like my boys there would bo no occasion for compulsion at all.” Captain Cowlishaw : “Quite right” His Worship : Your boys deserve credit. The appeal was adjourned sine die, suspension granted so long as appellant continues in his present occupation and assists to support his mother. OSWALD CLARKSON Edward Cooke Clarkson appealed on behalf of his son, Oswald Cook Burrell Clarkson Appellant had two sons at the front, and the one who was now called up wn\ managing his station Be (appellant) had ill health, and could not Work the faim He considered it would be against public interest to take his son, as he was pioduring wool and mutton His bov was managing the two faims and 7000 sheep They had onlv a boy of 17 to assist Mr Povnton He seems to be doing too much. He thought that if Mr Clarkson communicated with the association in Wellington he might get. a man.

Appeal dismissed, suspended till Mav Ist. PAUL HAWKINS Paul Hawkins, labourer, Taradale, for whom Mr. Dolan appeared, withdrew* his appeal. As he desirea dental treatment, the calling up of appellant was deferred till April 3rd. ANGUS MACDONALD. Angus MacDonald, shepherd, who claimed to be a naturalised American, appealed for two or three months’ adjournment on the ground I that he desired to fix up certain business. Appeal was withdrawn, the appellant not to bo called up till April 3rd. HENRY CHAS. WOODWARD. Henry Chas. Woodward’s appeal was adjourned in oroer that the appellant may appear before the Medical Board on the 17th. JOHN DEMPSTER THOMPSON. John Dempster Thompson, farmer, of Hastings, appealed on the grounds that be had two brothers at the front, mnnaging two farms of 460 acres and a butchery business. Appeal adjourned till his brother is ballotted for and medically examined, suspension meanwhile. W. L. WRIGHT. William Laidlaw Wright, for whom Mr. Lusk appeared, appealed on the ground that, as chief clerk at Borthwick ami Sons, he was indispensible. His mother was seriously ill, and his father was 67 years of age. He was the only sou at home. The freezing works were now in full swing. William Hamilton Maitland, manager for Borthwick and Sons, said the work done by appellant required special training. It was very difficult to get clerks. If appellant went it would disorganise the staff. A lot of meat was supplied to the Imperial Government, and the appellant had much to do with that. To Captain Cowlishaw : It would be a serious matter if appellant went. Decision adjourned. AN APPRENTICE S APPEAL. Ernest Harris appealed on the ground that he was too young. He was quite . willing to go into camp on March 6th. He wanted to protect his indenture papers. His employer (Robert Lee) expressed his willingness to protect the indentures, and the appeal was withdrawn, appellant to go into camp on April 3rd. JAMES MARSHALL. James Marshall, farmer, appealed on the ground that he managed a farm on which he, his mother and two sisters lived. .M r. Lusk appeared for appellant, who, he said, had no desire to avoid service to his country, but considered it a case where he should appeal. Decision reserved till after lunch. A GOOD RECORD. Ernest Edward Carrington appealed on the ground that he desired to fix up a patent. He would be, would be quite satisfied if given till May. Four out of five of his brothers had enlisted.

At this stage the Board adjourned till 10 a.m. on Friday. WITHDRAWALS.
