(Own Correspondent). The members of the local Bed Cross branch made a special effort last week, to raise funds and do their share towards liugmenting British Red Cross funds. A well attended social was held in the Hall, and ail entered enthusiastically into the various competitions, especially that of the wood-sawing under the supervision of Mr. R. McCarthy. A sweets and flower stall did good work. Miss Bryce soon getting nd ot her goods. A musical programme was very much enjoyed. The allowing contributed items : —Mrs. Lockie and Miss Gow, pianoforte duet; Miss M. Craig (Napier), recitation for whicW she received a hearty encore ; Miss s song was also greatly appreciated and so was a recitation and song by Mr. F. Jackson, (these called forth a vociferous encore); Miss Gow, song and Mr. E. Lockie song. Some ot the school children gave two hearty choruses and Misses Bella McLean and Jinnie Walker’s duet with aclions was greatly appreciated. Ine wood-sawing (ladies) competition was won by Mrs. H. Simmons, and the nail-driving by Mrs. Bell. The men’s wood sawing was won by Mr R. McCarthy. The ladies provided supper and a pleasant evening was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne’’ and God Save the King. About £25 will be the result of this little social. Last Fridav evening at the residence of Mrs. J. Neal, the girl friends of Miss Flora McLean entertained her at a handkerchief evening ou the occasion of her approaching marriage, and a very happy evening was spent in song and games. Misses J. Neal, I<. McLean and Mrs. G. Moncriff-Wright plaved pianoforte solos and Misses M (McLean, solo: J. Walker, E. Donovan, B. McLean and C. McLean (quartette) and Misses D. McNaughton and F. Carswell, duets, helped on the programme. T|w toasts of “The King,” “The Allies’ “The Boys at the Front,” “The Navy,” “The Guest of the Evening” and the “Host and Hostess” were responded to. God Save the King, and “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” were sung at about midnight.

The station was again very successful at the Hawke’s Bay Show, taking prizes in cattle, sheep and horses. Miss J. Neal 3rd for knitted sox and 3rd for child’s muslin frock; Mrs. Neal, second in buttonholes ; Miss McNaughton Ist and 3rd in stencilling and Sirs. G. MoncliffWright Ist in the ladies driving competition. Several cases of Christmas gifts for “the boys” at the front, have been packed and sent off and the Red Cross Branch still continue to send away a large case about every month. Our secretary has received word from headquarters in France, thanking our branch for cases of garments just to hand, which were very acceptable as they arrived at a time when very much needed. This acknowledgement was very encouraging to all our members, and fully showed how our efforts are appreciated, and spurred us on for further work, which we sincerely hope will not be needed much longer.
