MATERNITY WARD.

A HASTINGS REQUIREMENT. DEPUTATION TO MINISTER FOR HEALTH. A deputation from the Hastings branch of the Plunket Society, ecnsistings of Mesdames J. H. Williams T. AV, Lewis and J. S. McLeod, waited upon the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister for Public Health, yesterday afternoon, for the ourpose of urging the necessity for establishing a Maternity Home in Hastings and asking to what extent the Government would grant financial assistance. The deputation were introduced by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. Hart). The Minister, after hearing th© views of the deputation, stated that if the Government gave assistance towards the establishment of a maternity home in Hastings, such home would b© on exactly the lines of the St. Helen’s Homes as established in the four centres and in. Gisborne. He had given a good deal of consideration to th© birthrate question especially in view of the fact that the manhood of the country was becoming depleted on account of the great losses in the war. The main difficulty in the way of meeting th© wishes of the deputation was the question of finance, but if the Plunket Society would collect funds locally for a St. Helen’s Home he would do all in his power to secure a Government subsidy, and would relieve the Society of all expense in the maintaining of the Home. The deputation further discussed with the Minister the relation of the Public Society to the Public Health Department and St. Helen’s Homes, also the new constitution of the Plunket Society as suggested by the Minister. It is proposed that the branch shall be a unit, that at the chief centre in each provincial district there shall be a provincial union and that from the provincial unions there shall be formed a Dominion Council meeting . annually. The Minister gave a promise that as the societv increased the number of Plunket Nurses,. the Government grant would be increased. This concluded the interview and the deputation thanked the Minister and withdrew.
