“ALL RED ROUTE” PRIZE COMPETITION.

The prizes donated by the Kings Theatre management for the best essay on the “All Red Route” picture were awarded during the picture benefit entertainment last night. Nineteen children sent in essays. The judge, Mr. James Holmes, in awarding the prizes, said the majority of them were well written and some particularly so. Two of the writers never got any further than the Atlantic side of Canada and one of them was of the opinion that the R.M.S. Niagara left Wellington instead of Sydney. With those exceptions all the writers traversed the whole journey. One thing that surprised me in every one of the essayists was that none of them seemed to have grasped the idea that the British nation was the only nation in the world that could have made such a journey, that is, with the exception of the ocean travelling, it was entirelydone on British territory. Mr Holmes urged the children to read history and said if he were a rich man, which he was not, he would spend large sums of money in giving prizes in the shape of Sir Walter Scott’s novels, purely because of their historical atmosphere. He urged the children to go about with their eyes wide open so that they might see things. He referred to the remarkable success in reference to the recent writing competition and congratulated .all concerned. In the present instance two prizes he understood went to the District High School and two to the Convent school. At Mr. A. A. George’s request he thanked the management of the King’s Theatre for their generosity in donating han last night’s proceeds to the Fife and Drum Band Uniform funds. The following are the names of the prize winners:—Boy' over twelve •T 1.. 'Whitlock. District High School; boy under twelve, Jack Hopkins. Convent school; girl over twelve. Chryssie Lee, District High School; girl under twelve, Admah Koorey, Convent school.
