CANTERBURY RECOMMENDATIONS. Christchurch, Oct. 25. The Special Sub-committee _ set up by the Canterbury Patriotic Fund executive to report on matters likely to assist the society to systematically and effectively' use its funds for the permanent benefit of returned North Canterbury soldiers, has recommended that assistance be granted to men who prior to enlistment were domiciled in North Canterbury. no matter in what district in New Zealand they determine 'to settle ; providing tW this principle is recognised by the patriotic committee operating over the district in which any such men may settle. But every endeavour should be made to persuade men to settle in Canterbury. Among the many schemes of relief it was ■ecommended that special consideration l»e given to individual cases where obligations exist in regard to property payments and that co-rimitments for life insurance; and tuition fees of children, of sol-; diers be given sympathetic epnsid- I eration ; that grants be authorised. ; not exceeding £2OO, for University or other educational courses or to-’ wards the maintenance of the apnli-i cant whilst taking such courses, but; onlv in such eases where the appli-; cant can show that he is sufficiently i advanced in his studies to pass the necessary examinations within a, reasonable time that grants be au-i thorised up to £2OO to assist meh | desirous of Acquiring businesses but; only in suc)i cases where the evi-; dence submitted by the applicant is; such to warrant reasonable success I in the projected business being attained; that ten thousand pounds be set ?«:de for the assistance of I premanently mained and disabled, soldiers by (a) erection of institutions at some future date, (b) teachins new trades in the home.
