FIRST TEST.

THE NEW ZEALAND TEAM

The following team will represent New Zealand against the Australians in the first test at Dunedin Condliffe, Tuckwell, Robinson. Sneddon, Hemes, Reese. HickmOtt, Sandman, Bennett, Wilson, and Whitla.

Play commenced at 11.98 a.m. in beautiful weather. McGregor took the strike from Jones who went on in place of Scholium. His first over was a maiden. Laver and McGregor commenced to score . steadily and after 48 minutes’ play Laver’s score was 46, McGregor £4. McGregor then drove McMahon to the boundary, the total being 80, with loss of a wicket. . Later.

The partnership lasting 55 minutes was dissolved by Laver sending a ball high* and the bowler. (Scholium) making a good* 94—1 —51. Mailey followed and the century was reached after 61 minutes’ play. Nine came from McMahon’s fourth over, Mailey "being responsible for seven. The latter _ entered into double figures by driving Scholium for four. With two more singles 110 went up at 11.3. Jones Resumed bowling in place of McMahon, who-had bowled four overs at the expense of 99 runs. Hallamore made a good attempt to stump Mailey, but the batsman was too smart and bit the next ball to the boundary. At 19.1, McGregor hit an easy one into Harker’s hands, but the latter drooped it. McGregor hit the third ball in Jones’ eighth over for two, which brought hi 3 score to 50, he having been at the wickets for 80 minutes. Soon after the total score stood at 130. Runs came slowly for awhile, Kohlenberg and Jones sending down a maiden over each. By scoring two-off Kahlenberg. Mailey entered the. twenties after being 30 minutes at the wickets. The runs continued to come, mostly with singles and twos, and the Poverty Bay eleven’s total was passed after 95 minutes’ play. At the luncheon adjournment the score stood at 178. Scores :—
