AN OMINOUS OUTLOOK

CONTRACTS AT A STANDSTILL

.[PRESS ASSOCIATION COPYRIGHT.] (Received 21, 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, Feb. 21. The position in the iron trades is ominous. Already over 2000 are out and practically firm of magni tude is affected.

One of the most serious phases of the strike is th ft ’some, 400 at Hos kin’s pipe works have given their ultimatum, and the result is that the firm’s contract with the Water and Sewage Board will be at a stand still. This means that all the works for extending the eity and suburban water supply must be. hung up.. It also stops the extensions required and the erection of new buildings. The Trades and Labour Council has appointed a committee representing the whole of the iron trades to take charge of the dispute and conduct negotiations. They also decided to place no obstacle in the way of the firms vrorking which have already conceded demands amounting from 4/- to 10/- daily. The action of the men at Mort’s Woolwich docks in striking while the ships are undergoing repairs is regarded seriously. The shipping companies considered it would have a detrimental effect on the port and docking companies. The employers score*by the men disregarding constitutional methods fro discussing their grievances and taking the law in their own hands. Mr. Estell (Minister cf Labour) has undertaken to expedite the Wages Board in considering the men’s claims.
