While travelling at the rate of 50 miles an hour at Los Angeles, Day£ Lewis, an entrant in the Vanderbilt Cup race, lost control of his car and dashed into a'crowd, killing a war veteran and injuring five spectators, three of whom were women. Lewis’ condition is serious, as he was pinned with the mechanism under the overturned car.
