RECENT GAS STRIKE.

GAS SERVICE RESTORED.

TERMS OF AGREEMENT

Sydney, March 8

The gasmen’s mee ting accepted the agreement, which provides that the meh resume forthwith. The Government will summon a special session of Parliament within twelve days with a view to amending the Arbitration Act to allow the dispute to be dealt with by a board. The companies agree to give retrospective effect from the date of the resumption of work to any excess of rates contained on the board’s award.

Any increase in the gas rate is to operate for a sufficient period to enable the companies to recover the amount expended under the provision for a retrospective effect.

All the strikers are to be restored to their former positions and is to be no victimisation of the men by the companies nor by any men or unicn of men employed by the companies.

The gasmen’s secretary states that if they had not had the hospitals and public in their mind they would have been firmer in their demands.

The gas service has been restored. There is general gratification at the settlement.

Mr. McGowen claims that the result is an absolute triumph for conciliation.
