The great hui at Manutuke was opened to-day in the presence of hundreds of spectators and the Minister for Native Affairs, who v.as accompanied by the Hon. Dr. Pomare. Sir James Carroll, Mr. MacDonald, M.P., and Mt. Justice; Cooper, and was received with a spectacular haka by 160 members of the Ngatipuru tribe. In response to an address of welcome Mr. Herries outlined the Native policy on the lines of his Wanganui speech. Mr. A. T. Ngata, on behalf of the Natives, promised to carefully consider the Minister’s speech and forward a reply to him. Tiie hui will be continued for about a fortnight. A discussion on affairs a.” cling the welfare of the people is expread to commence to-morrow.
