PRETORIA MINE DISASTER. RESULT OF ENQUIRY. SHORTAGE OF SHIPPING. (Received 14. 9.35 a.m.) Sydney, Feb. 14. A vast quantity of wheat is awaiting shipment. The shortage of shipping facilities is causing a serious block. (Received 14. 2.15 p.m.) London, Feb. 13. At the inquest in connection with the Pretoria mine disaster at Bolton, the verdict was that the 1 accident was due to gas from coal dust, and probably a defective or overheated lamp. There was not evidence to show that there had been any non-compliance with the statutory obligation, but there was some evidence of laxity in the management. An amendment to the electricity regulations, and the provision of monthly reports on ventilation were recommended. ONLY A JOKE. LIBERAL WHIP EXPLAINS. (Received 14, 2.15 p.m.) London, Feb. 14. Mr. Guilland denies that he is preparing a list for peerages, and explains that what he said w?r harmless banter spoken at a private meeting. STUDENTS ON STRIKE. PROTEST AGAINST DISFRANCHISEMENT. (Received 14, 2.15 p.m.) St. Petersburg, Feb. 14. Owing to their prohibition to participate in politics, the students at the University have struck. They sang songs and poured maladorous chemicals in corridors. Fifteen hundred have been arrested, and 380 were released. The trouble extends to other cities. Women students are included in the strikers. ON THE WARPATH. (Received 14, 2.15 p.m.) Berlin, Feb. 14. Simon Copper’s Hottentots are on the warpath, and have entered German territory at Steinkoff.
