I FIRE AT CREWE HOUSE. j COUNTESS AND CHILD IN ! DANGER. I London, Feb. 10. A passer by discovered a fire in Crewe House in the middle of the , night and aroused the inmates, who > were asleep. I Urgent arrangements were made for the safety of the Countess and , the heir, who were just below ih« burning rooms. The upper floor was soon w-4| alight, and many fire engines quickly on the scene and succeed ed in confining the outbreak. Lords Crewe and Rosebery arrved during the fire and directed operations. Crowds of well-known society women and men arrived tn motors.

STATE PLANTATION DAMAGED. Auckland, Feb. 10. By a bush fire which spread to the State farm at Waeranga, damage to the value of some £2OOO has been done in the acacia plantation. Considerable damage is reported, and it was with much difficulty and only after the most strenuous exertions that the orchard and vineries were saved.
